Together with career consultant Wakako Imizu and Stefan N\u00fcsperling, CEO of N\u00fcworks, the three of us facilitated a one-hour session titled \u201cThe Art of Co-Facilitation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">Co-facilitation refers to two or more facilitators working together to facilitate a session. This is common in practice, and especially at conference workshops, most sessions are conducted in a co-facilitation style.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">Co-facilitation offers benefits to both facilitators and participants. This workshop was designed to explore how to maximize these benefits for both facilitators and participants.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">In designing the workshop, we began by researching how facilitators approach co-facilitation. We conducted a survey with facilitators both in Japan and abroad, asking the following questions:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>1. Years of facilitation experience<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>2. How often do you co-facilitate?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>3. When do you think co-facilitation is necessary?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>4. What style of co-facilitation do you prefer?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>5. What criteria do you use to select a co-facilitator?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>6. What was your best co-facilitation experience?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>7. For example, the criteria for selecting a co-facilitator also varies as below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/k-signs.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Co-facilitation-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/k-signs.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Co-facilitation-2.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/k-signs.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Co-facilitation-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/k-signs.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Co-facilitation-2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/k-signs.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Co-facilitation-2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">Based on these results, our workshop aimed to:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>\u2022 Quickly share the insights we had learned prior to the session.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>\u2022 Draw out new ideas and approaches to co-facilitation from participants.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>\u2022 Allow participants to enjoy themselves while observing a co-facilitation role-play.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">To achieve these goals, we displayed a lot of flip charts that show the result of the survey and we adopted an approach called \u201cTheatrical Facilitation.\u201d In this method, facilitators play certain roles and conduct the session in a theatrical format.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/k-signs.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/491348918_702427645455460_7098705243295480204_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"673\" height=\"505\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/k-signs.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/491348918_702427645455460_7098705243295480204_n.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/k-signs.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/491348918_702427645455460_7098705243295480204_n-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/k-signs.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/491348918_702427645455460_7098705243295480204_n-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/k-signs.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/491348918_702427645455460_7098705243295480204_n-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/k-signs.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/491348918_702427645455460_7098705243295480204_n-1536x1152.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">In our workshop, the three of us attempted to co-facilitate the session, but deliberately staged a scenario where our teamwork failed and the facilitators argued in front of the participants.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">We then reenacted what had happened before the session in a theatrical manner, allowing participants to witness both the pre-session and in-session dynamics of co-facilitation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">This setup encouraged participants to consider what the three facilitators should have done to succeed. Although we announced in advance that the session would be theatrical, the unexpected developments and continuous laughter created a highly unusual atmosphere for a facilitation session.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">A video showing the entire process is available for more details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Art of Co-Facilitation at IAF England and Wales Conference &quot;Facilitate2025&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tysnKvrSJMA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">The \u201cTheatrical Facilitation\u201d approach, which I often use at overseas conferences, offers several advantages as following<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>1. Japanese facilitators who are not native English speakers can memorize lines and speak smoothly.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">When Japanese facilitators present at overseas sessions, they tend to use filler words like \u201cWell\u2026,\u201d \u201cSo\u2026,\u201d or \u201cAh\u2026,\u201d which can sound less polished. Memorizing lines as a script and speaking in character helps avoid these fillers and allows for confident, natural delivery. Even though memorization is required, being in character makes it easier to speak naturally, and the interactive nature of the performance helps recall lines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>2. Character settings and scripted interactions allow co-facilitators to share roles equally.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">There are various styles of co-facilitation. Often, sessions are divided into topics, with each facilitator leading different sections. Sharing topics equally is one way, but I prefer progressing through interactive dialogue, which creates a more engaging impression and fosters \u201cchemistry\u201d between co-facilitators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>3. Projecting the workshop theme onto character settings and telling the story enhances the persuasiveness of the message. <\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">Theatrical format allows for interactive progression. The weight of each role depends on the character. For example, when pairing a well experienced facilitator with a younger facilitator, the well experienced often handles key messaging. I prefer adapting drama style to convey important messages through story, sometimes having unexpected characters serve as storytellers, which increases emotional engagement and persuasiveness.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">For example, contrasting \u201cShould do\u201d and \u201cShouldn\u2019t do\u201d in co-facilitation is more effectively conveyed through a \u201cGood cop, Bad cop\u201d story than through a lecture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\"><strong>4. By uploading a photo of the flip charts and prompting for a summary, we could create a facilitation graphic like drawn by graphic recorders.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco;\">This is too simple structure and may not depict a perfectly accurate summary, but it is very helpful to quickly landscape what we learned.<br \/>\nIn recent days, use of AI in facilitation is a topic of growing interest among facilitators worldwide.
